So after an amazing start to 2020 with our Februhairy (Trademark Pending) meet, raising just over £2,000 for Petals. We started looking into ways to build on a great start to our fundraising this year. That was until a pesky global pandemic hit our shores and put a few things on hold....
Then during a window of relaxed government guidelines and rules. 9 brave, courageous and some might say unhinged men with beards decided on the 3rd October 2020 to do a little charity walk 'around' the great city of Peterborough to raise money for our ongoing challenge to raise £6,500 for Whizz-Kids.
When I say around, we aren't talking about our usual Wednesday club night meets where we generally walk 'around' Peterborough frequenting some bars and maybe a cheeky Five Guys. These brave 'soles' decided to walk around the entire outskirts of Peterborough. A route that would see the beards covering just over 30 miles and trying to do this within the day.
The 9 brothers split in 3 groups of 6 or less (Following social distancing and guidance from the government at the time) set off at 6am from the Embankment heading out towards Whittlesey, turning left at Fengate. Heading north circling Peterborough in an anti clockwise fashion.
Taking in the delightful sights of Eye, Eye Green, Newborough, Peakirk and Glinton. Before heading on towards Helpton, Marholm and Castor. Then stopping at Ferrymeadows for some much needed refreshments and food to mark roughly the halfway point.
Once refuelled they carried on there adventure through the Ortons, the Hamptons, Yaxley, Facet, Standground then heading back to the start.
Through aches and pains, blisters and cramps 3 of the beards after showing true grit and determination unfortunately had to drop out between the 20-25 miles mark (Still not an easy challenge). The final 6 carried on and finished out the route finishing around 6:30pm. Which means they completed the challenge of 30 miles and covered this distance in just over 12 hours......Well done guys!!
On top of that raising over £1,000 pound towards our target of £6,500 for Whizz-Kidz (For info on Whizz-Kidz please see our charity page).
Brothers are like streetlights along the road. They don't make the distance any shorter, but they light up the path and make the walk worthwhile. - Unknown
